1. Q: What is 9djob.com and its value to Shanghai’s hospitality sector?
WH: The members of the International Branded Hotels of Shanghai, IBHS, were experiencing challenges in recruitment mainly due to the influx of new hotel openings and competition from other sectors be it in Shanghai or other areas. Therefore in 2007 we worked closely with EmporioAsia to develop a bilingual recruitment website dedicated to the international hospitality industry in Shanghai. This website is quite unique and I am not aware of such a sector specific recruitment websites like 9djob.com. We are all very proud of the result.
2. Q: How effective has this website been since launch in finding qualified candidates for your hotel and other IBHS member hotels?
WH: The website was launched at the end of March 2007, a year where over 7,000 new international hotel rooms will open, so a timely appearance! The website allows our member hotels to post their vacancies but it also allows potential candidates to post their CV’s onto the website for hotels to search for if they need to. This is a very successful combination factor and allows CV’s to be positioned in the right place at the right time.
3. Q: What are the keys to success in landing a good hotel job in Shanghai?
WH: Currently we have 57 member hotels with over 25,000 rooms. Our membership is composed of major 4 and 5 star branded hotel companies so potential candidates are very much spoilt for choice. As I mentioned earlier there are many new properties opening between now and a key benchmark date of 2010, the year of the Shanghai World Expo.
4. Q: What are the most important qualities that hotels are looking for in candidates?
WH: Hospitality plays a very key part in our business and a hotel can offer a very wide range of positions from the more obvious guest contact positions such as Front Office or Food and Beverage to the equally important areas such as Accounting, Engineering and Security. Enthusiasm, positive outlook, good service and team skills, language skills all help a potential candidate. Experience is also of help but most hotels will be able to offer induction and training to help new recruits master service skills at quite a fast pace.
5. Q: How can candidates see their career growth in a hotel in Shanghai these days?
WH: Shanghai has some of the best hotels in the world with very exciting food and beverage concepts, award winning designs and breath taking facilities. Shanghai has fast become a world cosmopolitan city with a very contemporary urban lifestyle living side by side with very traditional Chinese culture. Candidates can become very much part of this exciting stage welcoming visitors from near and far to experience Shanghai at its very best.
6. Q: What is the ultimate goal of 9djob.com and how will the IBHS and EmporioAsia achieve these goals together?
WH: Our original website was www.cometoshanghai.com and this allowed both the IBHS and EmporioAsia to work closely together and continue to fine tune their partnership. The website www.9djob.com is a new venture for both of us and the site is continually being updated to reflect feedback from the membership and also candidates. We need to make the site fresh, user friendly and to offer a win win solution for members and potential candidates.
7. Q: Is competition getting more fierce in Shanghai’s hotel industry these days for top people? What do hotels need to do to attract the best people these days?
WH: To shout from the roof tops that Shanghai is the place to be! There is a synergy in the city that is really exciting at this moment in time, if there was any place in Asia to be then Shanghai is that place. China is very much a hot topic at the moment and Shanghai is an excellent showcase for this great continent.
8. Q: If you had one tip to give people who want to get into the hotel industry today in Shanghai what would it be?
WH: Log on to www.9djob.com and just go for it. You would be joining one of the best industries available that is able to offer opportunities around the world in a variety of key positions in a wide variety of hospitality sectors.
9. Q: What are the three most important factors that hotels should be focusing on to find the right candidates?
WH: Employee relations, succession planning and offering the right benefit packages.
This is just a summary and space does not allow elaboration of these three key points but hotels are certainly placing more and more focus on these key HR issues.
10. Q: Will HR be a major challenge for hotels in Shanghai going forward and what are hotels and the IBHS doing about this with so many new hotels opening?
WH: Starting up this website is certainly a step in the right direction and I know that EmporioAsia have some great new ideas to keep this website going from strength to strength. Our membership is also growing and we will no doubt be over 60 hotels by the end of this year. By working together we can all recruit the best talent available and ensure that service levels in Shanghai match the expectations of our guests.
